Slate

Slate Raleigh

Slate is a metamorphic rock that’s comes from a sedimentary rock made of volcanic ash and clay. Slate is usually grey, especially, when used by tile contractors on roofs. This in no way means that slate is not found in other colors however, as many different variations of hues are readily available. Even purple or green colors can be found and imported from areas such as North Wales.

Slate tiles are used for walkways and exterior and interior floors. The tiles are installed with mortar and grouted within the connections and edges. Sealants are then applied to increase durability by protecting the slate from water and other chemicals. In addition, sealants give slate a better look by enhancing the shine and reflection of the rock. All tiles are sold with a flat back surface for an easier installation. Slate floors for exterior uses should not be polished and finished rough to avoid the creation of a slippery and potential hazardous condition.
